 Oliver!

This British musical, with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart, was first performed in London's West End in 1960. This is a big show, as anyone familiar with Dicken's Oliver Twist would expect and the Group pulled out all the stops and involved every member in some way. Performances took place in the Curzon Centre from 21-23 February 2008.

 Hamlet

Part of Hamlet posterOn 19-21 September 2007 a production of Hamlet was performed at the Beacon Theatre in order to help raise more funds for YT. (Box Office 01494 677236) Members of YT were involved, but the director, Mark Oldknow, has had to cast his net a little wider than usual so you may notice that the show is produced under the name of "Shared Intent Theatre" though it was originally intended to be a "Not So Young Theatre" production.

 New Member Day

On Sunday 2nd September the group held a New Member Day. If you are thinking of joining the group and would like to come along to the next one (or even sooner) please contact us and you will be added to our waiting list and invited along as soon as full details are released.

We acquitted ourselves well in all three festivals, with Mike Ivens picking up Best Young Actor in all three, Charlie Maling Best Young Actress in one and Jess Dutton Best Young Actress in another. We also won Under 16's and Under 21's at Maidenhead and the Under 16's at Chalfont. Other awards included nominations for best presentation and stage presentation with certificates of merit in both these at Chalfont and Maidenhead. At Maidenhead we came fifth out of eleven entries which is no mean feat and the total score was 77 with the winners achieving 83; it was a close run thing. Chalfont and Maidenhead results.

Those Good Old Days

On Saturday 7th January we presented our annual Social Evening, where we performed three one-act plays, live music and some sketches. The inclusive two-course supper was supplemented by a licenced bar and the evening's excellent entertainment, including something by our passed Patron, Ronnie Barker. Details in our Archive

Playing with Fire

Playing with FireOn Saturday, 22nd October, an 18-strong Young Theatre contingent (led by Group Chairman Martin Haswell) went to see the final matinee performance of Group Patron David Edgar’s new play Playing with Fire in the Olivier at the National Theatre.

The play—in which David Edgar returns to the subject matter he first explored some 30 years ago with Destiny, “the often febrile relationship between race and politics”—has as its theme “the strained relations between a modernising government and what it sees as the Old Labour bastions of the North.”

The excellent production had a strong cast, which included Emma Fielding, David Troughton, Trevor Cooper, Oliver Ford Davies and Paul Bhattacharjee, an ex-member of The Young Theatre at Harrow. The latter being both unexpected and great to see.
